February Farm of the Month: RedTail Farm

In this cold and often dreary month, RedTail Farm is still growing some of the best-tasting greens in Central Oregon, and for that welcome supply of vitality and greenery we are naming them our Farm of the Month for February! In addition to a variety of hardy winter greens like spinach, mustards, beet leaves, mache and arugula, Heidi and Doug Moir also raise farm-fresh eggs, Red Wattle pork, Columbia lamb and Piedmontese beef. For the past two years they have been dedicated to growing organic food for the community, using no pesticides, hormones or antibiotics in any of their products, and growing all their produce with organic seeds and farm-generated compost.

Understanding the need for all people, regardless of circumstance, to have access to farm-fresh produce and meat, Heidi and Doug have a small plot of their land to Feedin’ the People, a local non-profit whose mission is to feed people in dire circumstances. Last summer FTP raised over 1600 pounds of carrots, radishes, potatoes, onions, beans and peas which were all donated to Central Oregon families in need. This year they will expand their vegetable cultivation and add heritage pork and chicken to the meals that they distribute during the holidays. For more information about their partnership, please visit www.feedinthepeople.org.
For those of you who have visited RedTail on one of our Farm & Ranch tours, you know that Heidi and Doug run one of the tightest ships in the region, treating their animals like part of the family. Their pig pens are cleaned three times a day, while their chicken tractor receives similar attention and care. Keeping up on cleaning and maintenance every day means less work overall, and healthier, happier animals. You can definitely taste the difference when you bite into an impeccable leaf of spinach or taste their premium pork.

The best way to stay informed about what’s growing on at RedTail is to join their email list (email info@redtailfarmofbend.com to get added); you will receive a weekly update of what products are available to order, plus stories and pictures from the farm. You can also order RedTail’s mild swiss chard, spinach, braising or lettuce mixes from Central Oregon Locavore. You can also follow the farm on their new Facebook page!
